Garcinia cambogia is a small fruit having pumpkin like shape. It is found in tropical areas (Southeast Asia and India) and commonly known as Malabar tamarind. It is considered a diet supplement that helps in weight-loss. It contains the excess of calcium, iron, phosphorus, riboflavin, thiamine, and niacin.
Its use as weight-loss pills started in the 90s when a famous doctor Julie Chen talked about its benefits in a TV show. He was not clear that how it works and what are its ingredients but still many people trusted him, and they started to spend their money in selling it without having a clear idea of it.
Its skin has an essential component called hydroxy citric acid (HCA) that is considered to be effective in weight loss. It is claimed that this acid reduces the hungriness of an individual and it prevents the fat formation and its accumulation in the body cells. HCA has been used for cooking purposes in the past.
Keep in mind that it is a diet supplement not a drug and it helps to maintain blood glucose level and cholesterol. The best thing is that it is easily available in drug stores in pure form or may be blend with other food items depending on the product. It is available in both pills and powder form. So it is easy to use.
Most of the information given about the Garcinia cambogia is inappropriate so people should get the right information about it before its use.
How does it work?
The key component hydroxy citric acid is responsible for burning fats in the body.
. There is an enzyme in the body called Citric acid lyase that helps in the formation of an important fat called de novo lipogenesis. Hydroxycitric acid in the Garcinia cambogia blocks the activity of this enzyme and thus reduces fat level leading to weight loss.
. There is a hormone in the brain named as Serotonin that is responsible for the stimulus of hunger. HCA increases its level and thus reduces hunger. So it is obvious that less you eat lower will be the weight.
Does it prove effective?
We will decide that whether Garcinia cambogia is useful or not after looking at the following points;
Possible side effects
Although it’s a natural ingredient but still it has some side effects that vary from person to person which are;
- Stomach trouble
- Dry mouth
In 2009 it was said that the people stop taking Garcinia cambogia as a diet supplement to loss their weight because it is causing a serious liver problem. But it was not clear that whether it is Garcinia cambogia or other ingredients that are responsible for it. Some experts were blaming Garcinia cambogia and some to other components. There is still a doubt, but if you are interested in it, it’s better for you to consult with your doctor.
It interacts with other drugs
There is a great risk that HCA in Garcinia cambogia may interact with other medicines that an individual is taking. Your doctor should know what you are taking and if he suggests you then take it otherwise not.
Different researchers showed that Garcinia cambogia produce harmful effects with
- Insulin in diabetic patients.
- Allergy medicines.
- Medicines for anemia
- Pain killers
- Medicines for lowering cholesterol level
- Drugs for thinning blood
- It is strictly forbidden in case of pregnancy.
- If you are taking Garcinia cambogia along with the sugar controlling medicines, then your sugar level can drop to the dangerous level.
No doubt Garcinia cambogia is a natural diet supplement, but it’s not necessary that natural is always safe. There are many things that are natural but poisonous. The food and drug administration has not approved the Garcinia cambogia. So the claims written on the product cannot be trusted without the approval of FDA.
The diet supplement Garcinia cambogia has not been tested by the FDA to check that how much it is fruitful in reducing weight, whether it has any side effect or not and so on.
Long term use
There is no evidence of its use for more than 12 weeks. It means there is no proof for its effectiveness and benefits.
It proved less effective
Initially, the experiments were performed on both humans and rats. It was found that Garcinia cambogia causes almost 2 kg weight loss in 3 months in humans. So it does not prove effective. But there is a confusion that whether this weight loss is because of Garcinia cambogia or because of eating low- calorie diet or regular exercise.
The overall conclusion is that it is not an ultimate option. The researchers showed that it does not have any good response which makes the people sad as they thought that they still have to take exercise regularly and still need to eat a balanced diet which is very difficult. Instead of taking Garcinia cambogia, try to take exercise daily and take balanced diet. Surely it will be more useful.
But still, if you are interested in Garcinia cambogia to look for its best quality and ask your doctor first.
Always look for good quality
Before buying it always looks tag first because most of the companies sell low-quality products. If there is no label, it means something is wrong. Make sure that it is pure and does not contain so many other ingredients which make it impure.
There must be HCA
Make sure that this diet supplement has HCA or not. HCA is the key ingredient that plays its role by raising the rate of metabolism resulting in increased breakdown of fats and it must be up to 60%. If it is above 60%, then it is well and good.
Good quality Garcinia cambogia has the following features
- At least 60% HCA
- It must have natural ingredients
- without low- quality components
- Should be effective
