How to Build World Class Mental Toughness in Sports in 2020?

Mental toughness is always a hot topic in the sporting world. Great victories (whether individual or group) are often attributed to mental toughness and many successful athletes (Serena Williams, Michael Phelps, Tom Brady, Lydia Ko, Michael Phelps, …) are always associated to their mental toughness.

Let’s first look at what exactly is mental toughness?

There are so many ways to define mental toughness that the term can become quite dubious. Determined, confident, poised, optimistic, fortitudinous, persistent, are some of the common terms used to describe mentally tough athletes.

While all these words are true for mental toughness, there is one attribute that is the stamp of authenticity of mental toughness and that is… RESILIENCE!

Resilience is the capacity to adapt, adjust, recover, or change in order to achieve some end. The resilient athlete can, not only handle injury, mistakes, misfortune, and losses more effectively, but can also use these situations as learning lessons and fuel to fan their desire to succeed.

Former The National Football League (NFL) coach Dan Reeves best spotlighted the resilient people mentality as, “Difficulties in life are intended to make us better, not bitter.”

For example,

  1. The resilient athlete takes an injury as an opportunity to strengthen a body part or improving some aspect of his game during their competition layoff…
  2. The resilient athlete always looks for a way to pull out a victory where they do not have their “A” game…
  3. Last but not the least, the resilient athlete searches for a way to maintain self-control and calmness after succumbing to pressure in a critical part of a game.

I want to make it clear; he still gets upset after an injury or a loss but his focus quickly turns to how he can bounce back. So, we can say that resilient athletes look for solutions rather than living with problems.

You may be wondering, “Where does resilience come from?” 

Resilience is not a genetic trait. Resilience is an attitude that can be develop and grow but it requires your attention and effort.

How you look at hardship and your ability to bounce back from tough situations are hundred percent (100%) within your control. Everyone has an equal opportunity to grow their resilience.

  •  Look for solutions – Don’t live with the problem. Become adept at finding solutions. The more you are in the habit of being a solution-seeker, the better you will be prepared to handle the unexpected situations.
  • Recognize that your attitude is your choice – You may have no control over what happens to you but you have a choice of viewing those challenges and responding to adversity.
  • Take action – You can improve your situation by taking action. Your journey starts with a step.
